History: A Town Called Blades

The Town of Blades is one of Sussex County’s last incorporated areas — but in point of time, the town itself is possibly as old as its sister community–Seaford. In the early years of this century, when Concord to the East was developing as a village, this area which is now Blades had become sparsely settled with farmers. The soil was sandy and the shoreline was marshy. The early farmers chose to clear the land a mile or so back from the river. Trade was attracted to stores at Concord and at Laurel. In 1832 Samuel Laws, Jacob Wright, Henry Cannon, Henry Little, Dr. John Gibbons and Curtis Ross were authorized by an Act of the State Legislature to build a bridge from Seaford to the South bank of the Nanticoke River. Flag Day Retirement Ceremony

The town wishes to thank everyone involved in the Flag Retirement Ceremony.  Boy Scout Cub Scout Pack 182 did a marvelous job in presenting our country’s colors for retirement.  We were joined by State Representative Danny Short, Sussex County Council President Mike Vincent, and City of Seaford Councilwoman Grace Peterson.  Several veterans, citizens, and families of our Scouts were also proudly present for this somber ceremony.  A very special thank you to our awesome Blades Volunteer Fire Company for helping and participating in the retirement ceremony.  To view pictures of the event please click on View Gallery to the left of the webpage. Tree Planting at Blades Volunteer Fire Company

The town has donated two Celestial Dogwood Trees to be planted on the grounds of the fire hall on Friday May 9th, 2014 at 6:30pm. The trees are in memory of members of the Blades Volunteer Fire Company and Ladies Auxiliary members that have passed away. You are welcome to join the town and the fire company as we plant these two trees in an informal ceremony. We thank all the members of the fire company and ladies auxiliary for their service to our town and citizens.
