Fun Day at the Recycled Boat Regatta!

The town would like to thank the “Reclaim Our River” series volunteers Nan Zamorski, Phil Miller, and Jason Beale.  We would also like to thank DNREC Division of Watersheds, Delaware Nature Society at Abbott’s Mill Nature Center, Nanticoke Watershed Alliance, Nanticoke River Sail and Power Squadron, Nanticoke River Yacht Club, Nanticoke River Arts Council, and the Nanticoke River Marina for helping this event take to the water at the Blades Marina.  It was really a wonderful site seeing the 9 recycled boats navigate the course. The town thanks and congratulates every boat builder on the work and team work put in to building and manning these cardboard vessels! Looking forward to seeing you all again next year!

Recycled Cardboard Boat Regatta – Aug 9th, 2014, 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Theme: “Reclaim Our River”

Welcome to the wacky world of recycled cardboard boats. All boats must be made entirely of recycled corrugated cardboard. No metal, no wood, no screws and no motors. From canoes to cruise ships and space ships, you’re liable see it here and you’ll try to figure out, “Will that really float?”

Join us Saturday, Aug 9th, 2014, from 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. on the Nanticoke River at the Public Marine Park, 26 S. Market Street in Blades, Delaware, for our first annual Recycled Cardboard Boat Regatta!

The Regatta is open to participation from individuals, schools, youth groups, businesses, groups of friends, and non-profit organizations desiring to build a boat and participate. This is a wonderful team-building experience, giving employees an opportunity to work together toward a common goal and have a lot of fun doing it. Registration begins at 12 o’clock, judging at 2 p.m. and races at 3 p.m. in the order listed below.

Awards will be given for:

  • Pride of the Fleet (best construction)
  • Best Decorated
  • Best Team Effort
  • Most Whimsical
  • People’s Choice

Awards will also be given for the fastest times around a 200 yard (appx.) course in the marina in each of four categories:

  • Individual
  • Family
  • Youth Groups/Clubs
  • Businesses

Yes, cardboard boats can (well, many of them can) float. Some are engineering marvels, which can compete for the coveted Pride of the Fleet Award! For those that don’t float, we will give a Titanic Award for the best and most dramatic sinking!  Some suggestions for building a simple cardboard boat can be found at: http://www.capecoralregatta.com/Index/BoatBuilding.

"If I was the Mayor of Blades I would" Essay Contest

Blades Elementary School will be holding an essay contest for their Fifth graders.  The title of the essay is “If I was the Mayor of Blades I would”.  The Mayor has been asked to assist in the reading and picking of 2 winners.  The Mayor will then accompany the children and guardian to a lunch at Cafe Milano’s courtesy of the Blades PTO.

The essay contest will be 200 words and coincides with the last marking period lessons on understanding the government, as well as the field trip that they have planned to Philadelphia.

For the children, the essay contest will start March 17th and will end on March 31st.  Each essay will be coded so as to not know the students name to make for a fair grading.  Winners will be announced April 14th.

The PTO is hoping this will be an annual event.

The Mayor was very pleased to accept this honor and is looking forward to reading the essays. Good Luck to all the participants.
